    Stopped my plaquenil

I've been on plaquenil for 6 months for suspected Sjogren's syndrome (I don't have antibodies for Sjorgren's or Lupus but I do have Hashimoto's and have all the symptoms for Sjorgren's so the rheumatologist suggested a trial of plaquenil). Basically I've been on the drug since January and saw the rheumatologist on Wednesday to see how things are going.

Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of drugs called antimalarials. It is used to prevent and treat acute attacks of malaria. It is also used to treat discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis in patients whose symptoms have not improved with other treatments. Plaquenil is generally well-tolerated, but side effects are possible. Common side effects linked to Plaquenil include nausea and diarrhea. Taking the medication with food eases nausea for most people taking the drug. Less common side effects include skin rashes, hair thinning, and weakness. Jan 11, 2012 I have been on the plaquenil 200 mgm for about 4 months now. I did stop it for 2 weeks early in the treatment due to having to take a coupld other drugs that seemed to give me side effects. I just quit the plaquenil to give my liver a rest at that time. Noticed nothing different. Plaquenil isn a antiparasitic drug with anti-inflammatory affect.

I do think it's helped with fatigue and muscle pain but it's hard for me to compare to Xmas as when the improvement is so gradual I think it's really hard to notice on a gradual basis. I *think* I'm improving but it's been a gradual process and I said to him that it's quite hard to tell how much of an improvement I'm feeling.

  7. Taking plaquenil gave me moderate relief from the joint pain. I only stopped taking it because my primary physician would not keep prescribing it; she insisted that I should see the rheumatologist regularly. I could no longer afford to see him or the other specialists I was seeing.

One of the problems with Plaquenil is that because it's so slow to act, the improvements are also slow and subtle. So most people don't realize that they've improved until they STOP taking it. I've been on it twice, along with Atabrine another antimalarial. In my case, it never worked so I didn't notice a change. After the surgery, the blind area was more noticeable because my sight in that eye was so much clearer,” she says. “The surgeon sent me to a retina specialist, who recommended that I cut down my dose of Plaquenil. Finally, my rheumatologist recommended that I stop taking the drug altogether.”
