It does not work against certain types of malaria (chloroquine-resistant). The United States Center for Disease Control provides updated guidelines and travel recommendations for the prevention and treatment of malaria in different parts of the world.

Plaquenil is the brand name of hydroxychloroquine, a drug used to prevent or treat malaria 2. Plaquenil is also used for long-term treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis RA and systemic lupus erythmatosis. According to the Mayo Clinic, it can take up to six months' constant use before an effect is seen in RA 1. Plaquenil can cause serious side effects when used in high doses for chronic diseases such as RA over the long term. Along with its needed effects, hydroxychloroquine the active ingredient contained in Plaquenil may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention. Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking hydroxychloroquine I just had major spine surgery in November. The surgeon had me check with my rheumy about stopping Plaquenil and I was told to continue it, or just stop it the day of surgery then get right back on, I asked what would happen if I stopped for a week and was told I'd risk going into a flare. I stayed on it and surgery went OK.

This medication is also used, usually with other medications, to treat certain auto-immune diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis) when other medications have not worked or cannot be used. Discuss the most recent information with your doctor before traveling to areas where malaria occurs.

Plaquenil & Weight Gain/Loss - Interesting! I had been losing weight fairly rapidly and without trying before starting on Plaquenil - and it stopped after a few weeks of taking it, as did the alarming hair loss. I had no idea Plaquenil could be a weight gain culprit. I've been on Plaq for 4 years now, and weight gain is a problem.
