Is it necessary to wean off of plaquenil

It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability.

Yes, if the plaquenil controls your Lupus flares, it is best to not use the prednisone. I hope you can get off of it completely, or at least take a small maintenance dose. Take it very slow. Plaquenil is supposed to help with hair loss, not contribute to it. I would also suggest giving it some more time especially since the side effects of plaquenil are supposed to lessen after a few months of use. Weaning from hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil lingers in the system at least 50 days and cannot be taken while on the MP. Dr. Blaney reports he starts his patients on Benicar while they are waiting for Plaquenil to clear their system and has seen no adverse events.

Today, it is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, some symptoms of lupus, childhood arthritis (or juvenile idiopathic arthritis) and other autoimmune diseases. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria.

  7. Although, plaquenil is a DMARD a Disease Modifying Antirheumatic Drug and now at least you have the comfort of knowing that it was, indeed, modifying your disease. Hopefully it will kick in again soon, but it obviously has more work cut out for it, this time around.

I cannot contribute much, but just to say that I am currently taking Plaquenil at one end of the day and Minocycline at the other; and in my understanding of the many posts I’ve reviewed here – it is not unheard of to continue both and wean off the Plaquenil as the benefits from the AP take hold. I actually am still taking plaquenil, and my rhuemy has told me to skip two days a week of taking them as plaquenil is supposed to build up in your system, and she says after a while that the patient needs to wean off of it. Unfortunately, cessation of Plaquenil intake may not be a remedy since not infrequently, patients will develop objective evidence of progression despite discontinuation of the drug. Thus, the possibility of toxicity should not be disregarded and close monitoring of the ocular findings is required.

Chloroquine, an old malaria drug, may help treat novel. Chloroquine, or hydroxychloroquine, has been used to treat malaria since 1944. It can be given before exposure to malaria to prevent infection, and it can also be given as treatment afterward. Malaria is a disease that is caused by a parasite, unlike COVID-19.
